The Lao People’s Democratic Republic or Lao PDR, was transformed from the former kingdom of the Land of the Million Elephants on 2nd December 1975, when the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party took power. The country extends along the Mekong River for more than 600 miles and has a tropical climate with two distinct seasons. The Mekong River is the main geographical feature in the west and, in fact, forms a natural border with Thailand in some parts. The Mekong flows through nearly 1,900 km of Lao territory and shapes much of the lifestyle of the people of Laos. In the south the Mekong reaches a breadth of 14 km, creating an area with thousand of islands.

Geography The People’s Democratic Republic of Lao is located in the centre of Indochina, sharing borders with China to the north, Myanmar to the northwest, Thailand to the West, Cambodia to the south and Vietnam to the east.

Currency The Kip is the official currency of Laos. The bank notes are presently in Denomination of 20,50,100,500 and 1,000 kip. All major currencies such as (USD1=approx,Kip760) US dollar, French Franc, DM, Yen, Baht and others can be exchanged at Banks that are located in all major towns. In Luang Prabang and Vientiane competitive rates are offered by numerous authorized private exchange bureau. There is exchange facility available at Wattay Airport in Vientiane.
Visa A valid visa for a thirty day stay is issued at the airport upon Laos Embassies in foreign countries. Canadian, American, Japanese and German nationalities are visa exempt.

People & Culture The Lao Lum (lowlander) makes up 70% of the population and predominantly lives along The Mekong River. The Lao Theung (uplander) comprises 20% of the population and lives on the slopes and hills with an elevation of less than 1,000 meters. The Lao Soung (hill tribes) constitutes 10% of the population and lives in the mountainous areas. Lao people boast a plethora of distinctive monuments and architectural styles. One of the most notable structures is That Luang, the Great Sacred Stupa, in Vientiane, Its dome like stupa and four-cornered superstructure is the model for similar monuments throughout Laos.
